在綠能環保已成為全球車壇的未來造車的圭臬之下，BMW便以i電動品牌作為對趨勢的回應，而在先前的量產版i3盛大發表，以及法蘭克福車展上i8的正式登場，也就象徵著BMW i在產品陣容上，已經有了初步的架構，而為了能夠趕上未來上市的時程，BMW集團位於萊比錫專事打造i3的生產線也正式宣告啟動。
